Reefer Telematics and Container Tracking: Finally Coming of Age
A Past Perspective on Adoption Barriers and Future Trends
22. October 2025. Intermodal Europe, Barcelona
In 2005, analysts predicted widespread container tracking by 2025: 90% of reefers and 50% of dry boxes. Yet today both reefer and dry tracking deployments have not met these estimates, and dry significantly. Why did adoption lag?
Despite telematics offering real-time data for years now, container shipping has trailed other sectors due to economic, technical, and cultural barriers. Now, falling device costs, maturing standards, ESG pressures, and insurance incentives are accelerating change. Tracking is becoming the norm, not a premium.
This session revisits past forecasts to explore what’s next for container visibility in the decade ahead, and offers a vision of the intermodal supply chain beyond this decade.
