Reefer Telematics and Container Tracking: Finally Coming of Age
22. October 2025. Intermodal Europe, Barcelona
In 2005, analysts predicted widespread container tracking by 2025: 90% of reefers and 50% of dry boxes. Yet today, only 60% of reefers and 1% of dry containers are connected. Why did adoption lag? Despite telematics offering real-time data and ROI for reefers being clear for years, container shipping has trailed other sectors due to economic, technical, and cultural barriers. Now, falling device costs, maturing standards, ESG pressures, and insurer incentives are accelerating change. Tracking is becoming the norm, not a premium. This session revisits past forecasts to explore what’s next for container visibility in the decade ahead.
